THIRTY-FIVE

Jo drove around the city, lost in a maelstrom of anger and confusion. She could not believe what Sam had told her.

She felt like she had been carrying a lie all her life. She always thought her parents had a perfect marriage that only ended because of her father’s death.

When she was younger, there were many times when she would imagine what their lives would have been like if her father was still alive. She would imagine them going on picnics, going to the movies, and taking trips to Disneyland and other attractions.

She had become so obsessed with the man who had taken her father from her that she wanted to be an FBI agent just to catch him. The killer had destroyed the ideal life they were going to have. He had stripped them of all the joy they rightly deserved. And Jo was going to punish him for it.

What she did not know was that it did not matter what happened to her father because their family was already on the brink of collapse. It was not her father’s death that had destroyed her mother; it was his betrayal. He had cheated on her, and with none other than—Jo’s grip tightened on the steering wheel—Charlotte Walters.

She could not believe the woman who was like a second mother to her would do something like that. She could not believe Walters was the cause of all her mother’s pain. Maybe that was why Walters was always good to Jo. Walters knew the damage she had done to Jo’s family and was trying to make up for it. She was always concerned for Jo’s well-being. So much that when Jo had approached her about joining the Bureau, she had tried to discourage her. She did not want anything to happen to Jo. It was bad enough that her father was gone. She could not bear seeing something bad happen to his daughter.

But Jo was persistent. There were two very good reasons she wanted to join the Bureau: She wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a federal agent, and she wanted to finish what her father had started and catch the Bridgeton Ripper.

Maybe if she had known about Walters and her father, she might not have been so keen on becoming an agent. She definitely would not have worked under Walters. How could she do that to her family? How could she destroy a marriage? How could she never mention to Jo what she did?

Jo exhaled. She realized Walters was not entirely to blame for what happened. Her father was just as complicit, maybe even more so. Jo had revered the man so much that she could not imagine him ever doing anything wrong. He was her hero, but he was also human. He had strengths, but he also had weaknesses.

There was more to him than what she chose to believe. Perhaps if he were still alive, she would not have idolized him. She might have seen him for who he was and not what she thought he was.
